Abstract
957,314. Helicopter rotor systems. J. G. WEIR, and C. D. CHEATER. Feb. 8, 1962 [Nov. 25, 1960], No. 40562/60. Heading B7W. An aircraft-lifting and -sustaining rotor has at least two blades 32, 34 each freely articulated to hub 24, 26 by a single pivot 28, 30 whose axis intersects the hub axis at right angles, the spanwise axis of each blade extending substantially from the hub axis at an angle (#) to the pivot axis and when the blade is in the trailing position, Fig. 2, in which the spanwise and pivots axes are in a plane at right angles to the rotor axis, it has a preset mean pitch angle (α). Preferably angle (#) should not exceed 18 degrees and angle (α) should be in the range 6-18 degrees. In Fig. 1, two pairs of blades 32, 34 and 44, 46 are mounted on arms 24, 26 and 36, 38 of coaxial hubs driven in contrarotation from engine 22 through gears 16, 18, 20 and shafts 12, 14. For pitch and roll control by tilting the rotor head, Fig. 4, not shown, the hubs are connected to shafts 12, 14 by constant velocity universal joints.
