Abstract

623,497. Helicopters. SIPE, C. O. May 5, 1947, No. 12075. [Class 4] A helicopter rotor system comprises coaxial contra-rotating inner and outer rotors 7, 17 provided with openings in which are pivotally mounted blades 5, 15 on shafts 4, 14. The blades move into the lift-generating position shown, with their trailing edges below the rotor discs, when the rotors are driven, but close the openings to form a parachute when the direction of rotation is reversed. The leading edges of the blades carry flaps 6, 16 which engage the rotor discs to limit the swinging movement of the blades about the shafts 4, 14 under lift-generating conditions.
