Abstract

650,919. Electromagnetic relays. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Nov. 4, 1948, No. 28674. [Class 38(v)] A polarized relay particularly adapted for operation by D.C. superposed on an A.C. supply, has a shortcircuited coil A arranged on a branch of the magnetic circuit so as to vary the phase of the flux in that branch relatively to the flux in another branch whereby the resultant flux through the armature will have a smaller amplitude of fluctuation and the armature will be less liable to vibrate. In the ideal case, the phase difference is one half-cycle, equal flux is induced in the two branches and the resultant flux through the armature is equivalent to that obtained by D.C. only. In Fig. 2A the operating coil is mounted on the armature which moves between two poles on one of which the coil A is mounted. In a modification, Fig. 2B (not shown) the armature is bifurcated with the coil A on one of the prongs. Fig. 3B shows a different type of magnetic circuit with operating coils on the fixed parts and a resistance C included in the short-circuited winding. In a modification, Fig. 3A (not shown) instead of a separate coil, the top part of the operating winding is itself short-circuited by a resistance.
