Abstract
647,546. Stuffing-boxes. MOTOSACOCHE SOC. ANON. Dec. 31, 1947, No. 34983. Convention date, Feb, 17, 1939. [Class 122(v)] In a stuffing box for sealing a movable shaft 10 against fluid pressure 12 which includes a pair of cooperating members 11, 14 which embrace the shaft and are adapted to be screwed one into the other by screw threads 13 co-axial with the shaft, a tapered seating 16 carried by one of the members to receive a resilient packing ring 17 having a bore which fits the shaft and an outer surface tapered to correspond with the seating, so that pressure applied axially to the thick end of the packing ring will cause it to press tightly against the seating and the shaft and form a fluidtight seal, a circular knife edge 18 carried by one member co-axially with the screwthreads cuts into an opposed surface 15 carried by the other member when the two members are screwed together so as to prevent fluid under pressure escaping by way of the screw-threads. The face 15 may engage the thick end of the packing 17 to clamp it in position or, as shown in Fig. 2, a spring 20 may be provided for this purpose.
