756,460. Piston packing; stuffing-box substitutes. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT, Ltd. Nov. 5, 1954 [Nov. 12, 1953], No. 31368/53. Classes 122(1) and 122(5) A seal between two relatively movable members 3, 4, such as a piston and cylinder pr piston rod and cylinder end wall comprises a ring 1 of rubber or like resilient material located with axial clearance in a groove 2 in one member 3 so that it is subjected to the pressure P of the liquid to be sealed and a ring 6 of less resilient, synthetic resin material offering less resistance to sliding disposed between the rubber or like ring 1 and the other member 4 and having a cross sectional profile such that, irrespective of differences due to differences between its internal and ex. ternal diameters, the surface in sealing contact with the other member 4 is of lesser area than the surface in contact with the rubber or like ring. The ring 6 may be of polytetrafluoroethylene and its sealing surface area may be reduced by forming grooves, such as 7, in the surface or by cutting away one or both edges thereof.
