Abstract

759,233. Stuffing-box packing. ETABLISSEMENTS A. MARREL. Oct. 30, 1954, No. 31430/54. Class 122(5) A seal for a hydraulic ram comprises a U-section sealing member 5 of polyamide expanded into sealing contact with the ram rod 1 and the cylinder 2 by a ring 4 of deformable material, such as natural or synthetic rubber or rubber substitutes, having a cross-sectional area slightly greater than that of the groove in the member formed by the sealing lips 5a, 5b and axially pressed therein so that it wholly fills the groove. The member 5 and ring 4, which is of circular cross section in its free state, are housed in a counterbore 2b in the cylinder and axially compressed between a washer 3 of metal or other hard material and a metallic ring 6 screwed in the counterbore. In a modification the lip 5a of the member is longer than the lip 5b and the ring 4 is trapezoidal in cross-section with an oblique base abutted by a corresponding face on the ring 3.
