633,323. Refractory substances. POULSON, J., and POULSON, R. M. Feb. 28, 1948, No. 6282. Addition to 621,092. [Class 22] [Also in Group XII] Method of treating the inner surface of a silica gas retort comprises a primary treatment with a composition containing 4-30 per cent borax and 70-96 per cent silica and a secondary treatment with a composition containing 1-15 per cent borax and 85-99 per cent silica, the first composition being applied as a slurry, e.g. by spraying and the second composition either as a slurry or in powder form. The treatment is carried out while the retort is hot and one or more coats of each composition may be applied.
