Abstract
An insulating coating is produced on silicon steel by heating the latter in a reducing atmosphere to form a scale thereon, spreading upon the scale surface a liquid suspension of an oxide of magnesium, calcium, barium or strontium, evaporating off the liquid from the suspension and heating the steel to 1000-1230 DEG C. in a reducing or neutral atmosphere to form a silicate coating thereon. The scale produced by the first heating contains 25-40 per cent by weight of silica and 75-60 of iron and the second reducing atmosphere consists of coal gas which has only been partially combusted. If the scale contains insufficient silica for the formation of the silicate, a mixture of finely divided magnesium oxide and silica in the form of a suspension is spread on the steel and the precess carried out as stated above.
