Abstract
630,482. Arc-rupturing in switches. REYROLLE & CO., Ltd., A., and ROBERTS. F. A. Dec. 9,1947, No. 32492. [Class 38(v)] An arc-chute for an air-break switch having a moving contact 10 and arcing horns 12. 13, consists of a stack of spaced, mutually insulated, conducting or metal plates 16, 17, the lower edges of which are respectively inclined in opposite directions to form an inverted V-shaped channel. Initially, the arc travels straight through the channel between the horns 12, 13 but is caused to rise in the chute by magnetic biassing or air-blast and take a constantly increasing serpentine path around the plate edges. Eventually the arc splits into a series of short arcs extending between adjacent plates and is extinguished. The magnetic biassing is obtained by a blowout coil (Fig. 5, not shown) and pole pieces 14, or by making the plates 16, 17 of magnetic material. The inclined plate edges may alternatively be curved.
