[Class 123(i)] A pressure cooker comprises a sheetmetal vessel 10 having a beaded top opening 12 of elliptical form which is provided with a surrounding seat or rim 11 adapted to be engaged by a peripheral rim 17 of a cover 16. preferably with the interposition of a sealing gasket 18, when said cover has been inserted through the opening 12 and rotated into correspondence therewith. The cover is associated with a supporting member 19 in the form of an upwardly arched yoke having end portions 20, 21 which straddle the opening 12 and are preferably recessed at 22 to conform to the rounded juncture 23 between the top and side wall of the vessel, the two parts being connected by a stem 27 which extends upwardly from the cover through a socket 26 in said member 19. The stem 27 is keyed to the socket 26 so that the supporting member 19 is maintained in alignment with the shortest dimension of the cover, and a spring 30, disposed around the stem between stops 31, 32 on the stem and socket respectively, serves to urge the cover and supporting member towards each other, and yet permit the cover to be depressed relatively to the member 19 during its application to the vessel. Opposed handles, not shown, may be fitted on the wall of the vessel at the side of the opening 12 in alignment with the shortest axis of the latter, and each is preferably provided with a pair of locking ribs for engagement by the ends 20, 21 of the supporting member 19.
