586,581. Lids for resisting fluid pressure. PLATERS & STAMPERS, Ltd. (Ekco Products Co.). Oct. 13, 1944, No. 19856. [Class 123 (i)] A pressure cooker comprises a vessel 10 having an opening surrounded by a downwardly facing seat 12 and a flexible closure 15 large enough to engage the seat around its edge and capable of being bent temporarily to such a shape that it can be passed through the opening by being moved against a yoke 13 with contact faces engaging diametrically opposite parts of the closure, these contact faces projecting below the centre of the yoke and the closure 15 being attached at the centre to an upwardly projecting stem 14 axially movable relatively to the yoke 13 by alever 25 the free end of which is operable by the thumb of a hand holding a handle 20 fixed at one end to the yoke 13. Internal ridges 32, 33 on the container guide the closure 15 into a central position. A projection 29 on the handle 20 pivots in a recess 30 in the ferrule 22 of the handle 21, so that, when the plate 15 has been inserted in the container 10, it can be pressed against the seat 12 by bringing the two handles 20, 21 together and holding them together by a clip 31. To enable steam to escape if pressure becomes too great, the stem 14 is hollow and is closed at the top by a weighted valve 34, and the closure plate has a vent closed by a rubber plug 35.
