Class 123(1) A device for securing in closed position the lid 19 of a pressure cooker comprises a retaining member 10 extending across the lid 19 and being resiliently located in its operative position in which position only a pressure. relief valve element or elements 15 carried by the member 10 obturates a passage or passages 18 in the lid 19. The member 10 is a leaf spring the ends 11, 12 of which engage recesses in the vessel 20, and the element 15 has a conical rubber plug 17 which may be formed as a whistle. The ends 11, 12 may be extended at 13, 14 to enable a number of vessels 20, 21 to be superimposed. In one modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the spring 10 is secured at its centre to a vertical stem on the lid which engages the interior inner edge of the vessel and which is forced upwardly by the spring 10. Alternatively, see Fig. 4, the retaining member is a rigid bracket 34, a spring 33 pressing on a plate 31 fixed to the stem of handle 30 on the lid 29 which is hence forced upwardly to engage the vessel 28. In a fourth modification, the lid is exterior of the vessel as in Fig. 1, and a rigid bracket is forced downwardly by spring clips engaging the handles of the vessel. In this modification the plug 17 is replaced by a spring-mounted inverted cover which gives audible warning of steam escaping.
