Abstract

Formylamino-malonic esters are obtained by the catalytic hydrogenation of nitroso- or isonitroso-malonic esters in the presence of formic acid or an ester thereof. The hydrogenation may be effected at atmospheric temperature and raised pressure, e.g. 10-100 atm., but the reaction mixture is preferably heated after the hydrogenation, in order to complete the formylation; the mixture may also be dried and/or purified before it is heated. Examples are given of the production of diethyl formylaminomalonate by the hydrogenation of diethyl isonitrosomalonate in the presence of palladium-charcoal and ethyl formate or formic acid. The production of dimethyl formylaminomalonate is also mentioned.
