Abstract

7-Dehydrosterol esters, particularly 7-dehydrocholesterol esters, are prepared from 7-halogensterols by removal of hydrogen halides by means of 2 : 3 : 6- or 2 : 4 : 6-trimethyl pyridine or mixtures thereof, which are free from 3 : 5- and 3 : 4-dimethyl pyridine. In examples: (1) 7-bromo-cholesterol benzoate, prepared by treating cholesterol benzoate with N-bromosuccinimide, is heated with 2 : 4 : 6-trimethyl pyridine and the resulting 7-dehydrocholesterol benzoate is hydrolysed with alcoholic potassium hydroxide to give 7-dehydrocholesterol; (2) 7-bromocholesterol acetate is treated with 2 : 4 : 6-trimethyl pyridine to give on hydrolysis 7-dehydrocholesterol; similar results are obtained when 2 : 3 : 6-trimethyl pyridine is used in place of 2 : 4 : 6-trimethyl pyridine.
