Abstract
d-Ribonic acid dissolved in an organic solvent is catalytically lactonized to d-g -robonolactone on treatment with a strong acid. Acids specified are sulphuric, hydrochloric phosphoric, trichloroacetic and sulphonic, e.g. benzene sulphonic acids, strong mineral acids being preferred. The dissociation constant of the acid should be not lower than 1 X 10-1 Solvents specified are lower fatty alcohols, e.g. methanol and ethanol. In an example, d-ribonic acid, derived from calcium-d-ribonate, is dissolved in methanol containing sulphuric acid and d-g -ribonolactone obtained crystalline by the addition of n-butanol with subsequent distillation under reduced pressure of a portion of the solvent.
