Abstract
Compositions suitable for use as hydraulic fluids (see Group XXIX) comprise water, a solid polymer of an alkylene ether, a polyhydric alcohol or an ether thereof and if desired, a corrosion inhibitor. The preferred polymer is an ethylene oxide polymer of molar weight of 5000-25000. Specified polyhydric alcohols and ethers thereof include ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, liquid polyethylene glycols, b -hydroxyethyl formal, the monomethyl, monoethyl and monobutyl ethers of ethylene, propylene and polypropylene glycols, diethylene glycol monomethyl, monoethyl, monopropyl and monobutyl ethers, glycerol and 1.3-butylene glycol. Suitable corrosion inhibitors are alkali metal borates, phosphates, phosphites and silicates, morpholine, ethanolamine and sodium borophosphate.
