Abstract

Hydraulic fluids having lubricating properties, comprise at least 85 per cent by weight of liquid alkylene or polyalkylene glycols and/or ethers thereof, and/or monohydric aliphatic alcohols, and 3-15 per cent of a boric acid ester of mono or polyhydric alcohols or other hydroxy compounds, or a salt of boric acid with an amino base including ammonia. Alcohols and glycols referred to are ethyl alcohol, diacetone alcohol, diethylene, triethylene and ethylene, glycol; ethers specified are polyethylene glycol monobutyl ether, polyethylene glycol monoethyl ether, polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, dipropylene glycol monoethyl ether and polypropylene glycol monobutyl ether. Hydroxy compounds used to form the boric acid esters may be ethylene glycol, 1, 2-propylene glycol, 1, 3-butylene glycol, di- and triethylene glycols, glycerine, pentaerythritol, thiodiglycol and triethanolamine; mixtures of hydroxy compounds may also be used. The boric acid salt referred to is triethanolamine borate. 2 per cent of castor oil and 2 per cent of water may also be added to the hydraulic fluids.
