Abstract

Hydraulic fluids, which are substantially free from esters of ricinoleic acid such as a glycol ricinoleate, comprise a major proportion of one or more polyoxyalkylene glycols or ethers thereof as the base fluid, and a minor proportion of an orthophosphate or sulphate salt of a C4-24 primary or secondary aliphatic amine. Suitable salts are di-n-butylamine orthophosphate, diamylamine sulphate, oleylamine orthophosphate, and g -(b 1-hydroxy-b -ethoxy ethoxy) propylamine orthophosphate. The pH of the fluid may be adjusted to above pH 8 by diamylamine, morpholine, triethanolamine, or a mixture thereof. Other possible additives include benzotriazole, tartaric acid, and ethylene glycol.
