Abstract
A cooling liquid for use in machining metals comprises an aqueous solution of butyl alcohol, soap and one or both of (a) sodium orthophosphate and (b) one or more metallic nitrites. The solution has lubricating properties, will not rust metals and has the power of wetting greasy or oily metals. The soap may be prepared by the action of sodium or potassium hydroxide or an amine on castor oil, linseed oil or coconut oil. Preferably the soap has a different cation from metallic salts present in the solution. In the examples, compositions are described which contain (i) water, butyl alcohol, sodium orthophosphate, potassium ricinoleate, with or without sodium nitrite, or (ii) water, butyl alcohol, sodium nitrite and potassium ricinoleate or linoleate.
