[Class 12 (i)] [Also in Groups XXVI and XXXIII] A stern bearing arrangement for a ship's propeller shaft comprises a support member 1 which houses in axial outer sequence a pressure lubricated bearing, such as a bushing 4, a pressure-oil stuffing box device comprising for example opposed cup leathers 16, 17 subjected to oil pressure, and a packing device with pasty lubricant such as a stuffing box with gland nut 36 to compress graphited-asbestos packing rings 28, 29 and having grease fed from a container 35 by a spring piston to pass to the shaft surface through radial ducts 32 in a metal ring 30 arranged between the graphited-asbestos packing rings 28, 29. Leakage oil from the bushing 4 which may be grooved longitudinally or helically and one side 16 of the cup-leather stuffing box is collected by an annular channel 13 and returned to the oil sump or pump by a lower duct 14 in the support member 1. The cup leathers 16, 17 are spaced by a ring 21 with radial ports for entry of the pressure oil, the flow of which is controlled by an outer circumferential textile ring 24. The support member 1 is secured by a flange 3 shaped to the contour of the hull 2. Ball or roller bearings may be substituted for the bush 4; a spring blade 39 holds the gland nut 36 against unintentional rotation.
