Abstract
661,110. Stuffing-box substitutes. AALBORG VAERFT AKTIESELSKABET, and BLACHE, H. H. July 19, 1948 [July 18, 1947], No. 19369/48. Class 122(v) In a hydraulic reversing gear for screws with rotatable blades in which the blade adjustment is effected by a rod sliding in the screw shaft and attached to a piston in a cylinder which has covers provided with extensions secured to the screw shaft and an intermediate shaft respectively for rotation of the cylinder and in which pressure liquid is supplied to the cylinder through annular sealing devices placed about the extensions and between weardishes rotating with the cylinder, the sealing device has a stationary member 5 with an internal annular shoulder 11, sealing rings are disposed two 6, 7 between each side of the shoulder 11 and one of two weardishes 3, 4, a number of pins 15 are fitted into holes in the shoulder 11 and enter holes in the inner rings 7 to prevent rotation of the rings 6, 7, a number of coil springs 9 are housed in the shoulder 11 and in the inner rings 7 to force the outer rings 6 against the weardishes 3, 4 and a sealing cup 13 is interposed between the rings 6, 7 to abut by its peripheral margin the internal annular surface of the member 5 and the peripheral surface the recessed inner ring 7, while the inner rings 7 are unitary or radially divided in two and the outer rings 6 are radially divided in two or more parts. In an embodiment the surfaces of the rings 6, 7 between which the cup 13 is interposed are conical and pins 16 fitted in holes in both rings 6, 7 prevent their relative rotation. The peripheral surface of each composite ring comprising the rings 6, 7 is spherical about a centre in the shaft axis and in the median of the composite ring. Passages may be provided from the spring holes 12 in the rings 7 to allow pressure fluid to act upon the cup 13. Radial lubricating grooves provided in the surfaces of the rings 6, terminate short of the outer edge of the rings 6 and have shallow extensions in the direction of rotation. In a modification the surfaces of the rings between which the cup is interposed are plane and the rings are assembled by screws, being maintained in coaxial relationship by an annular shoulder on one ring. Each ring may be divided into halves being assembled with the joints relatively displaced
