Abstract
592,878. Motor attachments for cycles &c. PRESTWICH, J. A. May 29, 1945, No. 13464. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (iii)] In a driving means for cycles and the like, of the type comprising a prime mover driving a friction drum mounted on a pivoted frame the frame is rockable by means of lever mechanism embodying a toggle link. Fig. 1 shows a small inverted petrol engine 10 mounted on frame members 1 and 2 which are attached to the rear forks 3 of a cycle by means of brackets 5 and screws 6. The frame is braced laterally by means of a petrol tank 4. The engine is provided with a sprocket 15 at its inner end by means of which and chain 23 and sprockets 24 two friction rollers 25 are driven. The rollers are mounted on a swinging frame 20, 21 which pivots about the axis of the engine crankshaft. The member 20 encloses the chain 23. The rollers Fig. 3, are adapted to be engaged or disengaged with the wheel by a lever system comprising a lever 32 pivoted at 33 connected to a toggle link 30 in turn connected to the swinging frame. A small compression spring may be incorporated in the toggle link to ensure positive engagement of the rollers with the cycle tyre.
