Abstract
516,318. Cycle &c. driving - mechanism. ROBERTS, P. C. July 13, 1938, No. 20822. [Class 136 (ii)] Means for assisting the propulsion of cycles and like vehicles comprises an air motor consisting of a cupped or bladed rotor mounted on the crank axle within a casing to which air is admitted through a funnel-like member extending forwardly and upwardly and having a broad open upper end facing forwards, the rotor driving the road wheel either directly or through the usual chain transmission. In the form shown, a casing 1 is secured by stays 4 to the cycle frame, and contains a rotor 7 rotatably mounted by a sleeve 6 on the crank axle 5 and provided with a pulley 9, which is coupled by a belt 10 to a pulley on the rear wheel. Air enters through an opening at the upper end of a funnel 14, and escapes through an opening 16 at the rear of the casing 1. The rotor 7 constitutes a flywheel, and may be fitted with a clutch and brake.
