Abstract

A vulcanizable mass comprises rubber or reclaim, a tackifying resin such as cumar, optionally a softening agent such as lanoline or pine tar, and an accelerator such as Butyl 8 which requires a high temperature to effect vulcanization. The mass is dispersed in a solvent such as toluene or xylene and knife spread on a backing to form an adhesive tape. Partial vulcanization may occur when the tape is heated to remove solvent. The tape is used as a masking means in painting operations involving baking or high temperature drying, during which operation vulcanization is completed, with the result that the tape can eventually be removed from the surface to which it was applied without offsetting. An accelerator such as tetraethyl thiuram disulphide which does not effect vulcanization until a specific temperature is reached may be used in conjunction with Butyl 8.
