July 24, 1944, No. 14088, [Class 37] To improve the reverse resistance and critical voltage values of a selenium coated rectifier element the element is immersed in a bath containing lithium hydroxide of which the concentration at'the element surface is greater than 100 gms. per litre, which is normal for sodium hydroxide baths. The solution may be saturated or dilute in which latter case the element is connected to an electric supply as the negative pole of an electrolytic cell so forming a concentrated layer of lithium hydroxide solution on the element surface. The preferred counter-electrode used contains or is composed of lithium. Specifications 529,791 and 532,961 are referred to.
