Abstract

579,798. Ball or roller bearings. BRITISH TIMKEN, Ltd., and WASHBOURNE, W. D. May 18, 1945, No. 12553. [Class 12 (i)] A predetermined end play in a ball or roller bearing shaft mounting is set up by a locating ring which is screw-adjusted along the shaft to give the required axial clearance from the inner race by means of a shrouding ring temporarily attached to the locating ring and extending axially beyond the inner end thereof by the desired clearance, the composite ring (temporary shrouding ring and locating ring) being screwed along the shaft until the longer shrouding ring butting on the inner race has been tightened to take up all play and thereafter the locating ring being clamped in this adjusted position provides the required clearance after the shrouding ring has been removed. Fig. 1 shows a rolling mill shaft 2 supported in a housing 4 by a four-row taperroller bearing mounting of which the outer races 3 and spacing members 5 are fixedly clamped while the inner races 1 are located between a shoulder ring 7 on the shaft and an abutment sleeve 8 which, in conjunction with a locating ring 11 adjusted in position on the shaft, gives the required end play. The abutment sleeve 8 is splined on the shaft while the locating ring 11 moves on a buttress thread 9a provided on two half rings 9 fixed on the shaft. As shown on an enlarged scale in Fig. 3 a shrouding ring 12 is temporarily applied to the locating ring 11 to project beyond the end of the latter by the amount of the required end play clearance 17, the shrouding ring having a shoulder 13 for proper positioning on the locating ring 11, a helical rib and groove or similar means 14, 15 for moving the shoulder 13 into engagement with and then rotating the locating ring 11, and projections 16 or other means by which the composite ring (shrouding ring and locating ring) may be turned so as to tighten up the bearing through the intermediary of the abutment sleeve 8. On removal of the shrouding ring 12 an end play to the amount 17 will exist. The locating ring 11 is clamped in the adjusted position by means of a screw 18 entering a tapped hole 20 in the splined abutment sleeve 8. For unscrewing the locating ring from the shaft the arrangement shown in Fig. 8 is used where after re-applying the shrouding ring 12 there is temporarily bolted to the locating ring 11 an end ring 21 with a shoulder 23 for engagement by the outer face of the shoulder 13 of the shrouding ring; the locating ring will thus be unscrewed from the shaft by the reverse rotation of the shrouding ring when the shrouding ring binds on the shoulder of the end ring 21.
