Abstract
931,242. Burnishing by rolling. GEORGE H. ALEXANDER MACHINERY Ltd. Oct. 12, 1961 [Oct. 12, 1960], No. 34938/60. Class 83 (4). A roller burnishing tool comprises a mandrel 11 provided at one end with a frusto-conical portion 13 surrounded by tapered rollers 22 in a cage 23, and formed at its other end 12 for attachment to a machine tool, and a housing 16 which is rotated on a thread 14 to move the roller cage 23 axially relative to the mandrel by means of a sleeve 24 to alter the overall diameter of the ring of rollers. The sleeve is spring- loaded against the housing 16 with or without a thrust bearing 28, and indicia 18 and 19 allow precise adjustment of the tool. The included angle of each roller is slightly greater than half the conic angle of the frusto-conical portion 13, the rollers may be set slightly skewed to the axis of the mandrel, and the cage 23 end portion 13 can be removable to substitute differentsized members.
