Abstract
484,267. Bearings. STIEBER, W. Aug. 17, 1937, No. 22622. [Class 12 (i)] To adjust the wear in a bearing the perimeter of the bush 7 or of a sleeve 7 around the same is conical. The bearing housing 1 has a bush 2 with a conical bore, and between the two conical surfaces is a series of rollers 4. The latter have their axes slightly inclined to the bearing axis and are retained by a spacing cage 5. To adjust for wear the sleeve 6 is rotated slightly. This causes it to move axially to put radial pressure on the rollers. 4 and hence compress the sleeve 6 and bush 7. The sleeve is locked in adjusted position by teeth 8 engaging a locking plate 9. In a modification the bearing bush surrounds the conical rings and the rollers. The sleeves 6, 7, may be split. In another modification for a ball bearing the latter is carried in a sleeve 16 with a conical perimeter, and a sleeve 2 with a conical bore is carried by the bearing housing 1. The perimeter of the sleeve 16 and/or the bore of the sleeve 2 has helical grooves 15 in which bearing balls 14 are accommodated. Rotation of the sleeve 16 causes axial movement thereof and hence radial compression of the sleeve 16, and the outer race 17 of the ball bearing. The sleeve 16 and race 17 may be integral with one another.
