In making a pinch in the glass foot tubes of electric discharge devices and the like, after the glass has been initially softened by a preliminary heating, but before the glass is finally heated to the pinching temperature, a force is applied along the axis of the tube whereby the bottom of the tube is properly flattened and caused to lie evenly around the whole of its perimeter on the die block.
