Abstract
593,500. Shaping glass articles. M-O VALVE CO., Ltd., BREADNER, R. L., and SIMMS, C. H. April 10, 1945, No. 8837. [Class 56] [Also in Group XXXVI] Shaped glass parts having sealed therethrough one or more metallic conductors (see Group XXXVI) for use with the envelopes of thermionic valves are formed by locating the conductors in the desired spacial relationship in a die-block together with one or more members of glass, heating part at least of said glass members and establishing a gaseous pressure difference across that part of the glass to be shaped, so that said glass is forced into contact with the die-block and is shaped thereby and sealed on to the conductors. As shown, a die-block 1 having suitably disposed recesses 2 which receive the conductors 3, preferably pre-glassed metallic pins, is formed with two passages 4, terminating in openings adjacent to the recesses. The glass members 5 and 6 are positioned in the die and heat is applied to their upper parts. When the glass softens, the passages 4 are connected to a vacuum source and the glass collapses into the dieblock and is shaped and sealed to the conductors.
