572,813. Discharge apparatus. FERRANTI, Ltd. JACKSON, S., CHILCOT, A. L., SIONS, M. E., and SUTTON, R. W. May 29, 1943, No. 8627. [Class 39 (i)] An electric discharge tube has means for mounting members within and without its envelope in desired mutual spatial relationship which comprise internal and external protuberances l and m formed at pre-selected points of the envelope a, the apices of these protuberances lying on the surface on which the members are to be mounted. The envelope part a is mounted on a mandrel b which is of the same diameter as the inner member to be mounted. The glass of the envelope is softened at the pre-selected points by heat and then pushed in by a tool until it touches the mandrel and produces a protuberance of the desired height. The external protuberances may be produced by driving outwards softened areas of glass by high-pressure jets of air from orifices in the mandrel b. A suitably-shaped plate at the side of envelope a determines the height of the protuberances in a similar manner to the mandrel. In alternative oonstructions, the internal protuberances can be formed by reducing the pressure of air in the envelope and the external protuberances may be formed by an expanding tool within the envelope.
