Abstract
591,648. Glass manufacture. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and MOSCRIP, W. R. May 15, 1945, No. 12222. [Class 56] Glass stems or bases for electron discharge devices and the like are made by softening a thin sheet of glass by heat and blowing the softened glass by gas pressure into contact with a mould adapted tu form the external surface of said stem or base. As shown in Fig. 2, a thin sheet of glass 8 is supported in a frame 9 and 10 above a moulding die 2, having a central ejecting tool 3, both of which are formed with conical depressions 4 and 5 for producing corresponding perforated protuberances 6 in the base 7, onto which conductors or glass tubes may afterwards be sealed. The glass sheet is heated by a burner 19, which is then swung away and the upper part of the moulding device, Fig. 1, comprising a hollow cylindrical sleeve 12, adapted to fit over the edge of the die 2 and having a cutting edge 13, clamp ring 14 and shank 15 with central channel 17, is brought down, so that lugs 11 and 18 contact and force the sheet onto the die where it is held by the clamping ring 14. The cutting edge 13 sheers off excess glass against the outer periphery of the die and air is blown through the channel 17 and hole 16 to force the glass into the mould.
