Abstract
530,343. Glass manufacture. WURTTEMBERGISHCE METALLWAREN-FABRIK, and WIEDMAN, K. June 21, 1939, No. 18116. [Class 56] Relates to a method of making vasa diatreta wherein a glass vessel 3 is enclosed in an outer shell 2, preferably with apertures 13, to form a network, which is connected to the vessel 3 solely by glass bars 10. A doublewalled vessel is made first in the known manner by blowing a hollow body, adding more glass, reheating, and then working the glass inwards by a tool 5, Fig. 5, to form the walls 2, 3 separated by a space 6. While the body thus formed is still in the pipe and the glass is still plastic, the outer wall 2 is heated locally, for example, by applying small blobs of hot glass 7, Fig. 8, and a glass rod 8 is forced through the softened glass until it makes contact with, and adheres to, the wall 3. The projecting part of the rod 8 is then broken away leaving a projecting blob of glass on the wall 2 while a glass bar extends between the two walls. After the required number of bars have been inserted, the excess glass is ground away and apertures 13, Fig. 13, are formed in the wall 2 by any suitable means.
