[Class 78 (i)] In a conveyer of the en masse type, the trough or trunk is provided at one or both ends with parallel open-ended slots to receive a driving or trailing unit for the flexible tension member 41. Fig. 1 shows a driving unit comprising a frame consisting of a cross-girder 20 carrying at each side members 21, 22 which fit into the trough slots and support bearings 23, 24, 25, 26 for two shafts 27, 28, which are located close to the lower, and upper grooved edges of the girder 20. The shaft 28 has an extension 39 to receive a power drive, and is coupled to the shaft 27 by chain 33 and sprockets 32, 31. The bearings 25, 26 are adjustable by screws 35 and lock-nuts 36 to tension the chain. The member 41 carrying the conveying flights passes round a sprocket 40 on the shaft 27. In other forms, the shafts are geared together by toothed wheels, or a single shaft only is fitted, and the unit frame is of box form to enclose the conveying member at the turn. In a further modification, the conveyer member passes round a sprocket on a vertical shaft driven by a worm, a spring-pressed roller for tensioning the conveying member being incorporated with the driving unit. The conveying member may be tensioned also by springs bearing on the journals of the trailing end unit. A spring-pressed hinged door may be located near the delivery end of the trough to relieve pressure in case of jamming, and a switch contact may be combined with the door to stop the driving motor. Short lengths of trough provided with the slots at each end may be connected together by side plates bolted on to form an extended trough. The slots may be formed by fixing suitably shaped additions to the end of the trough, and may extend longitudinally or transversely of the trough. Specifications 493,769 and 499,954 are referred to.
