Abstract
561,336. Magnetic compasses. RECTA SOC. ANON. July 24, 1942, No. 10400. Convention date, July 24, 1941. [Class 97 (ii)] A pocket compass comprises a compass proper K with rim 7 mounted in a carrier 2 which is adapted to slide in and out of a casing 1. The compass K which has markings on a transparent base is held in position in the carrier 2 by blade springs 6, Fig. 6, and an index mark or lubber line 21 is carried by the carrier. The carrier 2 is mounted in the casing 1 and is held in its end positions by spring catches 8 engaging apertures 3, 4 respectively in the casing 1. A mirror 15 is pivoted at 14 to the carrier and when the latter is drawn out of the casing 1 the mirror swings into the " out " position. When, however, the compass is to be placed on a map, the mirror is swung into the carrier and then slid into the casing along guide grooves in the carrier and casing. Groove 121 and notches 12<11> are provided to act as a. sighting line. Fig. 9 shows the compass in use on a map. A cord S secured to the carrier is used as a line bearing connecting two places and the compass edge is placed along the cord when the bearing may be read off on the compass.
