Abstract

366,210. Magnetic compasses. CHRISTIE, R. G., 23, West Park, Eltham, London. Dec. 12, 1930, No. 37519. [Class 97 (ii).] To allow for magnetic variation in prismatic marching compasses the needle and card with or without the compass bowl can be swung about a vertical pivot in the casing of the instrument and clamped in the adjusted position. In the form shown, the compass bowl B is turned on the pivot stand C in the casing A until the magnetic variation is indicated by the scale E on the bottom of the bowl against a fiduciary mark on the casing. A thumb-nut F threaded on a screw fixed to the bowl and working in a slot G in the casing enables the bowl to be clamped in the set position. The casing A is provided with a reading prism D hinged at d and a sighting vane K. For night marching an adjustable ring H carrying a luminous patch is provided and the card carries a luminous mark. Luminous pointers may also be provided on the vane K.
