Abstract
546,407. Hydraulic transmission of power. VOSSELER, H. F., PIERARD, H. A. W., YOUNG, W. H., and HARKNESS, B. G. A. April 27, 1940, No. 7601. [Class 69 (ii)] A series of pumps 3, 4, 5 having capacities in the proportions 1, 2, 4 are connected by branched pipes 23, 24, 25, having bores in the proportions 1, 2, 4, to valves 12, 13 which are operated in unison and are so arranged that the pumps can be connected singly or in combination to the operated machine, the other pumps being simultaneously connected to a reservoir 1. In the preferred construction, gear-wheel pumps are employed, and the operated machine communicates through pipes 20, 22 and a reversing-valve 26 with the reservoir 1 and valve 12. Each valve 12, 13 consists of a casing 15 having ports 16, 17, 18 communicating with the pipes 25, 24, 23, and a rotary band 14 having rows A ... G of ports. The barrels are coupled or geared together, and the rows of ports are so arranged that the pumps can be connected singly or in combination to the operated machine, the other pumps or pump being connected to the reservoir; or all the pumps can be connected to the machine. The pipe-system may be provided with relief-valves 28, 31, and a shut-off cock 27 for braking the operated machine. The pipe 20 may be connected directly to the pumps, in which case the reservoir communicates through relief and supply valves with the pipe.
