Abstract
537,485. Mine roof supports. FUNKE, A. Dec. 21 1939, No. 32689. [Class 20 (ii)] The roof at the working face of a mine is supported by tensioning members applied in holes drilled in the coal face and adapted to be secured at both ends. The working face shown in Fig. 1, is supported by rods a<SP>2</SP> clamped in holes in the coal face and provided with hooked ends h' to engage over a horizontal support b carried by props c. Before the ends of the rods a<SP>2</SP> are reached by cutting a further series of holes intermediate of the previous ones are bored and a series of rods a' are disengaged from their support b and slid forward to engage in these apertures and a further horizontal support for their hooked ends is erected. The hooks on the rods may be formed by adjustable sleeves and wedges may also be used to effect the clamping. The forward end of each rod is ribbed as shown at A, Fig. 4. or may be attached to a wedge clamp g comprising interacting multiwedge members h, k connected by links and slots, so that slight withdrawal of the rod effects clamping in the hole. The rods may be provided with tensioning devices f<SP>1</SP> hooked to cap plates d on the horizontal supports and these plates may be attached by further tensioning rods a , f<SP>2</SP> to further cap plates on rear horizontal supports.
