[Classes 75 (i) and 126] On the door of a gas-cooker being opened the combustion gases from the burner, instead of passing into the oven, are directed into an exhaust conduit. In the cooker shown the hot gases from the burner 4 enter the oven through a slot 2 and normally circulate therein in the manner shown by the arrows before passing through an opening 17 between a pivoted plate 6 and the edge 13 of a false bottom 10 forming a conduit 11 leading to the outlet 15. Some of the gases may escape through holes 18 in the false bottom 10. When the oven door 3 is opened a projection 16 on the door releases the plate 6 and allows it to swing on its pivots 8 to close the opening 17 and cover the opening 2, thereby causing the burner gases to enter the conduit 11 directly. The gas supply pipe to the burner may be fitted with a valve operated when the door is opened to reduce the gas supply or, if the burner is fitted with a pilot light to cut off the gas supply. The pipe may also be fitted with a thermostatically controlled valve. In another construction the opening of the door allows a spring-pressed rod to turn the burner about a horizontal axis to direct the gases into an exhaust conduit without entering the oven.
