Abstract
527,577. Seamed joints. CARTNER, J., and STUCHBERY, A. L. April 15, 1939, No. 11476. [Class 83 (iy)] The longitudinal seam of a sheet-metal can &c. is formed by interlocking hooks 1, Fig. 1a, provided on the edges of the blank, one or both hooks having a doubled back portion 1a in which fluid or plastic sealing material 4 is located, and then pressing so that metal to metal contact is obtained at 7 and 8, Fig. 1, thus trapping the material 4 within the seam. In a modification, the portion 1a may be formed on the outer face of the hook to produce a joint as shown in Fig. 3, or extend over substantially the whole width thereof as shown in Figs. 4a and 4, or both. In a further modification, both hooks have inward doubled back portions 1a, Fig. 6a, cut to form castellated edges so that in the final joint the tongues 9, Figs. 6, 7, of one edge engage in the notches 6 of the other.
