Abstract

1,190,222. Seaming. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. 28 July, 1967 [29 July, 1966], No. 34783/67. Heading B3J. [Also in Divisions B5 and F2] A method of making the body portion of a tubular container comprises cutting away an end portion 18, Fig. 1, of one marginal portion 10 of a blank B of sheet material to provide a tapered end portion, deflecting an end portion 22 of an opposite margin 12 transversely of the length of the margin, and then bending the blank into tubular configuration, Fig. 3, so that the margins 10, 12 overlap with the margin 10 on the outside and the portion 22 extending outwardly into engagement with the margin 10 to form a gap between the end portions. As shown, the body is formed of tin plate, aluminium or composite metal and fibre laminates, and both ends of the margins 10, 12 have co-operating tapered sections 16, 18 and deflected sections 20, 22. Also, the axial edges 2, 4 are bent or burred over, as described in Specification 1,149,263. The lap seam may be secured by an adhesive 30 applied to one or both margins, or by solder. Alternatively, the adhesive may be extruded into the gap after the blank has been formed into tubular shape. An interlock seam may be formed with lap-seam end sections which are subsequently flanged for securing an end closure.
