Abstract
500,137. Seaming. ZEIGMEISTER, H. Nov. 29, 1937, No. 32914. [Class 83 (iv)] A method of forming longitudinal seams on preserve tins or the like consists. in forming radial, outwardly directed flanges 6, 7 on a body blank, inserting a packing strip 5 of rubber or the like between the flanges, rolling the flanges and strip together to form the seam,' Fig. 6, and compressing and depressing the seam'so that it will be flush with the outer surface of the tin, Fig. 7. The corners of the blank are removed by oblique cuts 4, Fig. 3, which may be straight or curved, so that the ends of the strip 5 project beyond the cuts. Elastic packing rings 8, Fig. 10, are placed on the flanges which are adapted to engage the end closures 9 for seaming thereto, the ends of the strip 5 being placed between the rings 8 and the flanges of the body.
