Abstract
522,016. Seams, reducing. UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION. Dec. 1, 1938, No. 34991. Convention date, Dec. 2, 1937. [Classes 17 (i) and 112] A seam ridge on an article composed of leather or like parts united near their edges, such as the back seam of a shoe, is reduced by searing it. A suitable machine is constructed substantially as described in Specification 456,064, [Group VIII], having a driven work-supporting roll 20 and a co-operating driven feed-wheel 22. A searing tool 32, heated to from 1,200‹ to 1,500‹F. by an oxy-acetylene flame issuing from a nozzle 52, has a groove 42 for guiding the seam to the tool, and grooves 44, 45 which assist in the removal of charred material. The tool is pressed against the work by a spring of strength of some 20 to 30 pounds.
