Abstract

547,489. Coating-machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO, Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). Feb. 26, 1941, No. 2588. [Class 95] [Also in Group VIII] The machine described in Specification 467,562. for applying a band of cement to the margin of a sole is provided with a knife,10 for chamfering the edge of the sole. The cement applying nozzle 12 is positioned close to one of two gauges 50, 52 both adjustable in the direction of the axis of a driven work-supporting roll 34 positioned between them. The axis of the roll is at an angle to the direction of feed, so that the work is urged against the gauges. A work supporting table 32 is vertically adjustable, and the work is pressed down on the table by a holddown 80 carried by the knife-holder 68. This holder is pivoted at 66 to the support for the gauge 50, and is urged toward the work by a spring 82, yielding of the holder allowing different thicknesses of soles to be treated. A deflector 96 guides the chip of leather removed by the knife away from the cemented surface.
