Abstract

590,662. Boots &c. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). Dec. 6, 1944, No. 24361. [Class 17 (i)] A machine for beating shoe welts comprises a work support in the form of an anvil into an opening constituted by a recess in the face of which an auxiliary hammer carried by an oscillating arm which also carries the main hammer forces marginal portions of the welt to stretch it. Successive operations of the hammers as the shoe is advanced along the anvil by the operator beat the welt and stretch out small parts and then flatten them. The invention is described as applied to a machine having certain parts similar to that described in Specification 17012/04, [Class 17]. The hammers 20, 22 are mounted on an arm 18 which is oscillated about a pivot 40 by a power-driven eccentric 42. The main hammer 20 ds carried by a rod 44 which is housed in a boss 46 on the arm 18 and is forced downwards by a spring 48, which bears at its lower end against a collar 50 on the rod 44 and at its upper end against an adjustable collar 52 screwed into the upper end of the boss 46. The auxiliary hammer 22 is secured to the arm 18 by bolts 64 and elongated slots 66 so as to be adjustable in the slotted lower end 58 of the main hammer 20 to align it with a V-shaped recess 24 in the work support 12. The lower end of the hammer 20 has two serrated workengaging portions 60 which engage the welt at points adjacent the seams of the shoe outwards of the edge of the welt to close the feather on the welt. The hammer 22 is rounded transversely at its lower face and is shaped to converge with the bottom of the central portion of the recess 24 in the anvil, the nose 32 of which is engaged by the operative in the welt crease.
