Abstract

614,838. Trimming machines for shoe uppers and soles. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). Aug. 3, 1946, No. 23201. [Class 17 (i)] A work-engaging device rotatable in the direction of work feed bears against portions of the work, such as of the out-turned flange of a stitch-down shoe, just before they are engaged by work-guiding means, during feed of the work, to facilitate their progress through a trimming machine. The work-engaging device is preferably power driven and of conical shape at its operative end with roughened surface, and bears against a flange of the shoe upper overlying the margin of a sole, in the crease of which the workguiding means is engaged. The invention is described as applied to a rounding machine generally similar to a Goodyear Universal Rounding and Channelling Machine, Model E, without means for varying the width of the trimmed sole margin or of channelling the sole and comprises a head 22, supported on a column 20, and carrying work-engaging and operating members. A stationary guide 24 of U-form is adjustably secured to the upper forward portion of the head, by slot and screw connections 26, to engage the shoe crease. A rounding knife 36 is fixed in the forward end of a slide 34 mounted to reciprocate in horizontal guides in the machine head and the outer edge of the knife cuts against an anvil set in the work-engaging face of one, 30, of a pair of feed members 30, 78, which overlies the margin of the shoe sole, the other 78 forming a resiliently mounted angularly adjustable shoe bottom rest engaging the tread surface of the sole. The feed members have work engaging faces of converging nature and by their respective driving eccentrics 60, 122 (not shown) one member 78 is moved more rapidly than the other 30 in the direction of feed. Two co-operating cam members which are moved simultaneously in opposite directions reduce the periods during which movement of the feed members 30, 78 has to be interrupted to grip and release the work. The work-engaging device comprises a spindle 174 rotatably mounted in a bearing member 170 between collars 176 so as to permit some freedom of movement and not adversely affect the positioning of the shoe by the crease guide 24. Shanks 164, 168 on which the spindle 174 is adjustably mounted may be varied in position both longitudinally and angularly so that the conical roughened end 179 may be adjusted in position close to the guide 24 with its axis upwardly and rearwardly inclined. The spindle 174 is driven by a pulley and belt drive from a shaft 62. The margin of the sole and the curved surface of the spindle 179 form a converging throat which smooths out unevenness in the flange of the shoe upper and permits its free passage to the crease guide 24.
