Abstract
693,574. Stapling. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). Sept. 5, 1951 [Sept. 6, 1950], No. 21921/50. Addition to 614,503. Class 89 (iii). In a boot-making machine for securing uppers to insoles by fastenings e.g. staples which do not pass through the work but are curved away from the sole edge by a deflector which penetrates the work before the driving of a fastening, the deflector 120 is operated by means including a toggle 190, 192 and is,adjustable towards and from the driver 56 to vary the curvature imparted to the fastening. The machine described in the parent Specification is modified in that the deflector 120 is operated from the drive-actuating bell-crank lever 92 through a cam roll 188 engaging a slot 186 in a lever 184 which is pivoted on a shaft, 78 carrying also a lever 180 which is coupled by a link 179 to arms 178, 172 and a pin 167 and slot 170 to the deflector. The levers 180, 184 are rigidly connected together by the spring-straightened toggle 190, 192. When the toggle is broken by the engagement of an extension 204 of the cam roll 188 with a bell-crank lever 200 coupled to an extension 197 of the upper toggle lever 192, the deflector 120 is withdrawn by a spring 182 engaging the arm 180. The deflector 120 has a cylindrical stem 126 slidable in a bore 130 in a block 132 which is mounted on a bracket 148 by flanges 131 engaging grooves 147 to permit of adjustment of the deflector to and from the driver 56. The bracket 148 is mounted on a bracket 24 by a grooved block 27 which permits adjustment in two directions at right angles. The slot 170 is enlarged at 171 to permit removal of the deflector from the machine. Specification 294,640, [Class 89 (iii)], also is referred to.
