Abstract
519,522. Bleaching cellulosic materials. MATHIESON ALKALI WORKS. Aug. 17, 1938, No. 24277. Convention date, Sept. 1, 1937. [Class 15 (ii)] Cellulosic material is bleached by introducing chlorine, as gas or in aqueous solution, into an aqueous solution of a chlorite of an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal in contact with the materials. The process may follow a partial bleaching with chlorine or a hypochlorite. In examples: (1) and (2) kraft pulp is partially bleached with chlorine, re-suspended in a solution of sodium chlorite and chlorine introduced over a period, in one case with the addition of a sodium acetate-acetic acid buffer ; (3) sulphite pulp is bleached in a bath of sodium chlorite into which chlorine is introduced and then subjected to a similar treatment in a bath, of different strength ; (4) sulphite cellulose is bleached by treatment in aqueous suspension with chlorine followed by treatment with chlorine while suspended in sodium chlorite solution; (5) to (10) cotton linters, cotton cloth and viscose rayon are bleached by treatment in a solution of sodium chlorite into which chlorine is introduced as chlorine gas or chlorine water.
