Abstract
In a multi-stage process of bleaching sulphite cellulose pulp in which the pulp is subjected to a preliminary partial bleaching in an aqueous medium with chlorine and, in a later stage, to bleaching with an aqueous solution of a hypochlorite, the preliminary partial bleaching is effected in an aqueous medium with chlorine dioxide and chlorine. The preliminary bleaching may be carried out at a pH of 2.5-2.7 using an aqueous solution of sodium chlorite and chlorine at room temperature. After the preliminary stage the pulp may be filtered, washed and reslurried with caustic soda at 140 DEG F., whereafter the pulp may be washed, reslurried and treated, e.g. with calcium hypochlorite.
