Abstract
Cellulosic pulps, e.g. wood pulps are boiled with a dilute alkali solution at a temperature of at least 125 DEG C. and are subsequently treated with a mixture of a chlorite and a hypochlorite in proportions such that the amount of available chlorine derived from the hypochlorite is from one half to twice that derived from the chlorite. The pulp may be boiled as a slurry of consistency 5 to 20 per cent by weight with sodium hydroxide of concentration 0.4 to 6 per cent and may be bleached as a slurry of 2 to 18 per cent by weight consistency, at temperatures between 10 DEG C. and 60 DEG C. and pH between 7 and 10, which may be adjusted with sodium hydroxide. Sodium chlorite and hypochlorite may be used. Boiling temperatures up to 170 DEG C. are specified. Either the boiling or the bleaching treatment may be preceded by other alkali treatments or treatments with chlorine and/or hypochlorite, and the process may be followed by other purification treatments. The example relates to the treatment of sulphite pulp.
